Country import guide
Import duty and customs fees for the United States
A US estimate begins with the ten-digit HTS classification, country of origin and entered value. Additional tariffs and entry fees can matter as much as the ordinary duty rate.
Official source links checked 5 August 2026.
What makes up the estimate
- Customs value
- For a normal sale, CBP generally starts with the price paid or payable and makes statutory additions. Separately identified international freight and insurance are generally not part of the transaction value, so the calculator is a conservative planning aid rather than an entry calculation.
- Customs duty
- The Harmonized Tariff Schedule shows the general duty rate and special programme indicators. Products from some origins can also face Section 301, trade-remedy or emergency tariffs. These measures must be checked separately from the base rate.
- Import tax
- The United States has no federal import VAT or GST. CBP can collect federal excise taxes and user fees, while state sales or use tax is outside the federal customs calculation.
Worked example
Illustration only: $1,000 entered value with an assumed 5% ordinary duty rate. Shipping and insurance are shown separately and are not included in this simplified US duty base.
| Step | Calculation | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Entered value | Price paid for the goods | $1,000 |
| Illustrative duty | $1,000 × 5% | $50 |
| Federal import VAT | No federal import VAT or GST | $0 |
Illustrative total: $1,050 before shipping, insurance, entry fees and any additional tariff.
Important: Do not assume a low-value shipment is duty-free. US low-value rules changed in 2025, and the current treatment depends on the entry and applicable measures.
Estimate your shipment
Search for the product before relying on a percentage. The estimator uses a national tariff row where available and labels fallback data and known gaps in the result.
You will need the product, the country you are importing into, where the goods are from, the goods value, and any shipping or insurance costs you want included.
Most duty is a percentage of value. Some products use weight, quantity or volume; those parts are shown as not priced until the required unit can be calculated.
How this was worked out
Duty basis: waiting for a product or HS code.
VAT/GST basis: waiting for a product or HS code
Extra duties are included only where the available data matches this product and route.
Estimate only. Duty and VAT/GST are calculated where the available rate data supports it; unpriced fees, exemptions, quotas, or eligibility rules can still change the final customs bill.
